Who would imagine
that in the back woods of
northwest Georgia there would be
remnants of Danube Swabian
immigrants from days gone by, found
in a small community called
"Budapest" in Tallapoosa, located in
Haralson County. I had to see
it for myself and in 2002 I did.
The quaint small Budapest cemetery,
has about 15 graves. On the
headstones are some names familiar
to those in my Donauschwaben
research of Banat, but to the local
residents, they were all considered
"Hungarians" - regardless of ethnic
background.
While researching my
family from
Austria-Hungary whose
destination was Atlanta,
Georgia, I discovered
this settlement of
"Hungarians" in
Haralson County . . . Tallapoosa,
Georgia,
and that
Atlanta
& Tallapoosa
were destinations for
many Donauschwaben from
the villages:
Blumenthal,
Blumental (German) /
Masloc (Hungarian) /
Maslak (Romanian);
Fibisch (German) /
Temesfüres (Hungarian) /
Fibis (Romanian);
Temeschburg or Temeswar (German) /
Temesvár (Hungarian) /
Timisoara (Romanian);
Franzstadt/Mehala
(German) -
Suburb of Timisoara /
Ferenczvaros
(Hungarian).
Today these locales are
territories of Romania,
in the Banat region of
the former
Austria-Hungary.
Historical records in
Georgia refer to these
immigrants as Hungarians
or Magyar, regardless of
their ethnicity, due to
their former
citizenship.

In 1888, 200 Hungarian

12,726 acres of land in
Haralson County.
In 1888, three wine-making communities
were founded here on some 2000 acres. A local land developer, Ralph L.
Spencer, invited some 200 hundred Hungarian wine-making families to
settle in this region. They named their large community BUDAPEST, in
honor of the capital of Hungary. The village of TOKAJ recalled the
famous wine-making region of Hungary and NYITRA was named after an
ancient fort in the northern region of their homeland. Homes, streets,
shops, a school, a Catholic church and a cemetery & other municipal facilities were
built.

| | January 8,
1908 the passage of the
Prohibition Act in
Georgia spelled the the
winemaking
doom for the little town
of Budapest. The
residents scattered to
other parts of the US,
back to
Pennsylvania, perhaps
back into the mines,
some to St. Louis and
Cincinnati; but some
remained and are buried
in the little Budapest
Cemetery. Some
moved to Atlanta and
died there. One
particular family was the Frey family,
ancestors of John Frey of
California, who is one of the Village Coordinators
for the village of Blumenthal, Banat.
August, 2008, he and his wife
Mary visited Georgia for a
glimpse into the past in the
Budapest Community where his
ancestors lived. We had a
great time in Tallapoosa and
Budapest and the trip proved to
be worthwhile. I invite
you to read John's "A JOURNEY IN SEARCH OF MY
FAMILY"
- it certainly should be
encouraging to all researchers,
one many can identify with also. |

Cemetery Cleanup Day - Nov 3, 2008

Fredenberg's Tallapoosa Notes - Feb
2006
JM -- Keep these notes in your Budapest files:
GRAPEVINE Restaurant: It was EXCELLENT! (Much better than my dinner at Ruby
Tuesday.) Yes, the same man was in the kitchen -- he is the owner, Mr. Karaberis
and he is Greek! His daughter runs the front and I guess he stays in the kitchen
all the time. I got a menu, but it doesn't have their address or phone number on
it, but it's on Atlantic Rd. just before the railroad crossing. The Chicken
Souvlaki ROCKS! & I even had a piece of Baklava -- very good & not too sweet as most
are.
KEYS CASTLE: The waitress, Toi Reid, from Carrolton said the clergy's
quarters is locally known as KEYS CASTLE after one of the previous owners, who is
related to her husband -- I didn't get how. The road it is on is called "Devil's
Kitchen Road." I meant to record the name of the road, but someone was behind me at
the stop sign, and I pulled out without recording it. There is a florist shop on
the corner in a log cabin and it is right off of Hwy 78. Beyond the house is a
little bridge across the river, and Mrs. Estevanko said the church was over there.
I drove a ways down the road, and there a some newer houses down there, but was
anxious to get to the cemetery as it appeared I had time for both.
On the way back out toward the road, I noticed a very nice house -- looked to be
about 20 years old with a very interesting little barn ruin in pretty good condition
on the property. I stopped and knocked on the door, but nobody home. I took
pictures of the barn (and the house so I'd remember what it looked like. I also
spotted an old deteriorated wooden house behind the first tree line and snapped a
photo of that. I am wondering if they could be remains of the Hungarian Colony
buildings. The mailboxes had no names.
MARY SHADRIX -88 yrs. old - phone #: ***-***-****. Mrs. E. gave me the wrong
# and I had to look it up in the phone book. She is listed as M. Shadrix. Said her
father was a PA miner and had black lung. Said her grandfather didn't raise wine to
sell -- her grandmother drank it all! Her great grand nephew is Joe Colney (His
grandfather was Rado), with whom you have corresponded -- says he knows more about
the genealogy stuff. She took exception to the fact that Mrs. E said she was the
most knowledgeable person left in the area about the cemetery -- said Mrs. E only
said that because she was the oldest!
I did get THREE very useful pieces of info from Shadrix -- she suggested calling the
Sacred Heart Church in Atlanta to ask them about the church records. Also, in
speaking of the winery, she said, "Some man had the bright idea to become a
millionaire and advertised for the workers up north," which gave me the bright idea
that we should check ancestry's newspapers to see if we can find any ads.
MAP: When I stopped in town at the Mayberry/Tallapoosa Police Dept., I saw a
kiosk with brochures, etc. & I got a Haralson County map -- very good. It shows
Budapest road and the Budapest Cemetery. It actually lists Budapest as a town!
I'll scan and send later.
INTERESTED NEIGHBOR: Jerry Busbin, 122 Budapest Road Cell ***-***-****.
Interested in the cemetery -- thinks it's cool. He's a truck driver and knows a
woman, also a truck driver, who lives on Budapest Spur -- a small dirt road (road
is in shape of a half circle -- probably where they got the name "Spur"). He can't
remember her name, but said she's always on the internet and would be interested in
your page. Her husband's first name is Kenneth. She said in the back of her
property are two large holes which she feels are the ruins of wine cellars. Jerry
is a very nice guy (about my age) and rides his bike to Daytona Beach every year for
Bike Week. Jerry said some people with a Hungarian accent once came to his door and
he knew as soon as they started speaking they were looking for the cemetery.
TALLAPOOSA: Chartered in 1860, and the town was formerly known as "POSSUM
SNOUT." Tallapoosa comes from the Creek Indians meaning Golden Waters. No
Historical Society in Tallapoosa, but there is one in Buchanan (per police
dept.) (Mrs. Estevanko calls it "Tallapoosey.")
BUDAPEST CEMETERY: Seems to be in o.k. condition -- deterioration, but I
didn't notice any vandalism or obvious damage. Does not seem to be any worse for
wear with the garbage trucks barreling down the road in front. As the waitress at
the Grapevine commented -- good thing you came at this time of year, or the grass
would be grown up around and make it hard to take photos.
No photos tonight -- I can't find my camera cable and I'm beat. Time to update my
camera for sure.
It was great fun -- thanks for letting me share your project. I loved having
something to do outside in the woods -- but it was COLD!! Wait til you see that
frozen fountain!

West of Tallapoosa, just over the
Georgia line in Alabama is a town once knows as
Zidonia. Ralph
Spencer changed this
name to Fruithurst,
where be once again

It is said that his
translator George Grunik
and the Budapest Priest
Francis Janishek
accompanied him and
their names also appear
on documents forming
these fruit companies.
