" . . . he is a survivor of Tito's extermination camp in Gakowa."
I was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada and have always lived in the greater Toronto area. I am a first generation Canadian with Donauschwaben ancestry on my father's side of my family. He was born in Kischker, Batschka, which is where all of my Engel ancestors lived since the village was established in 1786 and he is a survivor of Tito's extermination camp in Gakowa. My mother's German ancestry is from Poland, which is where she was born, but was displaced to Germany after the start of WW II. I grew up in an extended family which included my father's parents and his grandmother. This afforded me the privilege of learning both high German and the Schwowisch dialect of Kischker, as well as some of the history, culture and cuisine of the village.
I have been a member of the DVHH since 2008 and have served as the assistant to the Mail List administrator and as a member of the board of directors.
