Surnames you are researching: Schäffer, Aschenbrenner
Villages of interest to you: Verteskozma (Kozma)
Comments: My great-grandfather, Josef Schäffer immigrated to New York in 1912 from Kozma (now Verteskozma) in Hungary, with his wife Theresia, my grandfather Stefan Schäffer & his brother Josef, Jr. Most of his extended family stayed in Hungary, until they were expropriated & expelled by the Communists in 1946. I was told they then emigrated mostly to Eschwege in Germany. I have had no contact with any Schaffer’s in Eschwege, but I have happily been informed about them by my distant cousin Peter Kindl, whose parents emigrated to Eschwege. I would love to know more about my cousins in Germany & whether any Schaffers remain in or near Verteskozma Hungary.

Villages of interest to you: Futog, Indija
Comments: My father was born in Alt-Futog in 1925. His father was born in Indija in 1890. I can't find parents for my grandfather. The surname used to be Weltzenbach, which records show were in Veszprem, Hungary. The name changes about 1860's to Velczenbach in Hungary. I have found records showing 3 other people with the surname Wenzelbach, each seemingly unrelated, all in the US. We are in Ontario, Canada. If anyone has some information that might help, please contact me.

Comments: When my late brother Rudy had a stroke in 2005, he ended up partially paralyzed and suffered some memory loss. I promised him then that I would take over the administration of the www.Rudolfsgnad.net website. I have now done so for more than 14 years.
I have noticed that the traffic (visits) to the website is down more than 50% since a year ago and even more than that since the website was created. I am now looking to sell the domain name to someone who is interested in taking over the administration of the Rudolfsgnad.net website. Anyone interested in doing so can contact me using the Guestbook on the website.

He was from Hasborn in current-day Saarland (near St Wendel) and is listed in the Perjamosch Church's Totenbuch. I'm using the LDS online resources and am seeing references to other Besch family members in the Perjamosch Church records there. I hope to join your organization and get on the email list, and maybe get some questions answered about my family in the Banat. The link to the email list isn't working from your website for me. Also, who do I contact for the Lookups? Vielen Dank! Ray

How did you learn about the DVHH site?: stumbled onto it
Surnames you are researching: Stefan, Simon, Brand(t)
Villages of interest to you: Bela Crkva (Weisskirchen), Vrsac, Panchevo
Comments: I'm looking for any relatives that may have survived WWII, from my mother's family. Particularly great- aunts or uncles and/or 2nd cousins etc.
My mother Margaret (Margit on her birth certificate) was born in Bela Crka in Apr 1925 to Janos and Katerina Simon. Her father Janos was born Nov 1898, died 1946. Katerina was born in Sept 1908, died 1937. Mom had a brother Johann born Apr 1927, died Oct 1987 in France and a sister Julianna 1932-1933.
I think Janos had a sister Marishka, and maybe a brother Ferenc and Katerina had a half-brother Nikola who died in 1944.
Janos' parents were Ferenc and Julianna Simon, and Katerina's mother was Theresia (Rezi) Brand.
Mom married Franz Gerhard Stefan in June 1941 and had 3 children, Franz 1940-1945, Jakob 1941-1942, and Erika 1943-1975. She was interned in a couple of different concentration camps after her husband disappeared in 1943 and she eventually escaped with my half-sister Erica to Austria. From there she emigrated to York, Alabama, USA, and later moved to Canada where I was born.
Thank you in advance for any information you may be able to share with me.

Comments: Hello. My grandparents were born in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia in 1919/1920 and came to the U.S. in the early 1950's, eventually settling in Mansfield, Ohio. Unfortunately I have never been able to figure out which Hoff ancestor led the way from Ulm (presumably) to the Banat. I have a treasure trove of items inherited from my Opa, but unfortunately my German is not that great to be able to read most of it.
I came across this website several years ago when I was devoting more time to genealogy (it comes and goes). This is a fantastic site and I thank all of the contributors and hosts for taking the time to support our Donauschwaben community. Prost!

Comments: My father, Fred Balnek, was born in Panschowa in 1913 to Mathias/Matyas Balnek and Christine Schatz. They emigrated to America in 1921. My father's older sister was Julia/Juliana Balnek; a younger sister, Christine Eleanor Balnek was born in Panschowa on a later trip from America. My grandmother wanted her youngest child also born in her native land.
Over the years I have tried without success to locate any information on my father's family; the name "Balnek" seems to be rare. Now I realize I am not alone in my search and others have had the same difficulties I faced. What a relief to know I may be able to trace my families' origins.

Villages of interest to you: Somogy megye (county)
Comments: Good afternoon:
I've recently become interested in tracing my family tree through many family stories. All my family is still in Hungary. My parents came to the US in 1956 and were the only ones from either side of both their immediate families who left Hungary. However, after hearing many family stories from my 87 year old mother, I've learned that my great grandmother was "Swab" but uncertain of the village of origin. My family roots are mostly from Somogy, placing the village in the Swabian Turkey area.
Any information that anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. My mother's maiden name is Hagyanek with a strong family connection to the Veszralek family (I apologize for misspelling). Great grandmother was Anna Drexler and great grandfather was Antol Veszralek.
Thank you in advance for any information.

Surnames you are researching: Abel and Tiefenbach
Villages of interest to you: Palanka
Comments: My grandparents passed when I was young. they both came to the USA after WWI. They were only in my life ten years but spoke broken English with strong German accents.
Your site solved and clarified so much for me. When I went through their old photos of Palanka I saw shop signs with Cyrillic writing. There was also an abundance of black and white post cards from Palanka. But when I tried to locate on a map I see Palanka is a town on the Danube in Serbia. Nothing seemed to fit, their USA Nautrualized Citizen papers indicated they came from Austria Hungary.
All of the pieces of the puzzle fell together when visiting your informative site. I had never known of the Donauschwaben, but it is now obvious to me this was their heritage and also mine.

Comments: I've been trying for years to find more information about my father's family. My father, Joseph Schilling, son of Anton and Theresa(nee Weber), was born in Budaörs in 1935 and his family was expelled in 1946. They settled in Baden-Württemberg after being in a displaced persons camp. My father came to Canada in 1954 and settled in Hamilton, Ontario.
I know a fair bit about what happened from my father but there's a great deal of information missing. My father is the only member of the family in Canada. the rest remained in Germany. We apparently have some family in Hungary who were not expelled. My father last visited them in 1977.
My connection to Donauschwaben culture is limited, all based on my father's memory. My mother was German and learned to cook some Donauschwaben food, again based on my father's recollections.
I've been trying to connect some of the dots with my family in Hungary but very little is available online.

Peter Jacob Schmidt married Susanne Gengler in Biled about 1909. Susanne had siblings named Katherine, Elizabeth (died young), John and Conrad. Conrad attended military school in Vienna, served in the Austrian-Hungarian military against the Italians in WW1. Conrad died in Vienna in 1935. John had at least one child named Nick who was born in Biled in 1908. Susanne immigrated to the US about 1907 with her brother John and his wife. Susanne returned to Biled about 1909 to marry Peter Schmidt. Peter and Susanne then immigrated to the US about 1912. They had at least one child named Niklos Schmidt. There may have been other children named Katherine and Peter. I believe all three children died early in life. I believe Peter Schmidt had 2 brothers named Adam and Jacob. I hope and
will appreciate any information I may receive. Thank You, Sincerely, William Schmidt |

I am looking for information on a Peter Brill, son of Johann Brill and Marianna Kilzner, of Giarmata/Jahrmarkt. Peter Brill was born in 1875. Johann Brill died in an accident, and his wife remarried a man named Matthias Glassman. Peter Brill was drafted into WWI, and married Elizabeth Yost upon his return. They emigrated to the USA in 1920, and settled in Pittsburgh, PA. I am also looking for information on Michael Loris and Anna Yost, parents of Elizabeth Loris. I have birth dates, but would like to learn the parents of any of these people. Thank you for your consideration. |

My wife's grandfather, Anton Ebert, emigrated in 1887 from Weisskirchen. I have contributed a brochure to DVHH that documents a Gesellschafts Club in St. Louis that Anton apparently joined. He stayed there before moving to Southwest Missouri, where he farmed. I'm interested in the name Ebert, which may have been spelled differently before the family came to the US. The family was apparently involved in the growing of grapes and perhaps production of wine. Religion may have been Catholic, and the history of the region would certainly support that, although there was an immigrant in St. Louis who told my wife that she knew the family in Weisskirchen "when they were Jewish." The parties who could help clarify these name and religious questions are dead, unfortunately, so if anyone
researching this area, now in Serbia, has ideas about them, I would appreciate your input. |

I am looking for some help to find any information I can on my father. His name was JOHANN BECK and was born in BULKES in 1911/1912. He died in Canada in 1984. He knew the Beck family was originally from Trier, Rheinland-Pfalz so he is most likely from the family of Johann Beck (1768-1831) who came from Wirschweiler bei Trier and settled at Bulkes about 1788. I do not know his father's first name but his mother's name was MARIA MAYER from Bulkes. His grandmother's last name(Maria's mother) was GRUMBACH. I found a photograph of Bulkes men reading books. There is a Johann Beck(HNr.156 *21.12.1911) who lived at dwelling house number 156 when the photograph was taken in 1938. Does the person who originally had this photo or anyone else have further information on this man. He may
very well be my father! The link to this photograph "BULKESER KAMERADEN 1938: Beim Lesen neuer Bücher für die Ortsbibliothek im Haus von Jakob WAGNER, HNr. 261. "is: http://www.bulkes.de/bilder.html Does a list(s) of all occupa |

I am trying to find both his parents' info so that I can continue to trace back until I find their village of origin in Germany (to which I believe they returned after WW2). My 101 year old sister recently passed away and among her effects was a share certificate in the "Banater Hall Company" dated Nov 7 1928. My first interest was in the unlikely residual value of the thing but as I went along I became aware of the Danube Swabian organization and was somewhat intrigued.
Anyway, I have this piece of history and am wondering if anyone would be interested in it for historic of archival purposes. I would be quite glad to post it to someone who has a reason to want it; no charge.
The origin of the certificate is in Cleveland OH where my family came from. I am aware that there seems to be a few related orgainizations and not sure who might most be interested if indeed, any.
So, there it is. I have it and will be glad to send it to anyone with an interest. If not your organization, perhaps you know of another that might have some interest
Cheers

I am Mark from Chicago, Schwaben family names Meiszl and Tumele (through my maternal grandmother). I have been in Arad, Romania paging through state archives for about a month now, slowly piecing together my family tree from the villages of Glogovacz (now Vladimirescu), Fakert (now Livada, German- Baumgarten), and NeuPanat (now Horia). The archives have births, deaths, and marriages, but they do not have immigration records that are acceible to the public. Also, they are classified after about 1900/1910. My grandmother came over to Chicago in 1912 as an infant, but some of her aunts and uncles / stayed behind. I know about all the ones who came over, so I am looking for my second cousins who didn't, most of whom went to Germany. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I
know that some of the cousins visited my grandma's sisters in the 90s, but since my grandma was the last one of the family she was not close and had little interest, and none of my aunts or uncles showed any interest so we do not know who they were!
Other than this, I am happy to know there are websites like this for keeping people together and traditions alive. |

Also, my grandparents left Baranya and had a farm near Rushevo in Milanlug, now in Croatia. Would like to find details as to when and why they moved. Also looking for birth records for Father and his siblings. Are church records available for Ivanbattyan, Rushevo and Milanlug? Birth years 1895 and forward; the civil records do not show their births. Thank you. |

Hi,
I made some good stew yesterday that was a bit like lesco and a bit like goulash, that always gets me thinking. I realized I had no idea from which area of Hungary that my paternal lineage came from. My Grandpa and his family had a farm near a village which I cannot spell or find. I believe it was pronounced like "etchy" as in etch (like etching a number on metal) with a Y (ie sound) at the end. I never know if its a German, Schwowisch, or Hungarian word.
If I ever go to Europe in my life (not that I'm that big on making a pilgramage there or something) I would at least like to be aware of the general locations of things. Rather than only being able to say which country; that's not very specific.
I don't think it was in the Banat region since it wasn't Romania when they lived there during WWII. Although, from the litle reading I've done, I gather my Grandma's family (Schwartz) did come from Banat quite a bit before the war. since I've heard assertions about how my Grandma's father didn't like being told he was now a Romanian after WWI. |

I'm not sure when the Fritz family moved to Caransebes or from where. Since I just started my family tree I'm not sure where to look for all this information. I simply googled Banat and clicked on different links, and found this site.
If anybody has any information on a Stefan Fritz, born 1899 I believe, his parents, or his wife Katharina Leitinger, and her parents, I'd be very grateful.
This is a great site! |

Hello,
I found a document from 1939 that my Great Aunt had created of our family history. The family roots go back to 1827 to Joseph Schneider to the town of Bulgarus - with his parents being Fillip Schneider and Susanna Schang. I have a number of other relatives listed in this family document and am very interested in researching the history. Other family members include:
Eva Schmidt, born in Bulgarus 11 Feber 1832 to Jacob Schmidt and Elisabeth Meininger
Eva Theisz, born in Bulgarus 30 January 1860 to Nikolaus Theisz and Anna Weber
Anna Weber, born in Bulgarus, 5 October 1836 to Johann Weber and Elisabetha Noel
Johann Lutz, born in Sacalaz, 2 November 1863 to Nololaus Lutz and Magdalena Muller
Magdelena Wagner, born in Sacalaz, 19 Marz 1865 to Andreas Wagner and Gertrud Hummel

Hello to all,
Although I have ancestors from several villages in the Banat region, the focus of my searching at this time is the village of Csatad/Lenauheim. I am specifically looking for the birth family of Michael Sehi, who was born abt 1860, most likely in Csatad. He married Barbara Herzog, 30 Jan 1883 in Csatad. They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who married George Minnich.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

I am still reading the articles on your site. The picture of Joseph II signing the document does not belong in the 19th century. He died in 1790; his mother Maria-Theresa, who started the colonisation and whose portrait he is symbolically standing in front of, died in 1780; this document should then be dated between 1780-90.
I would be interested in helping with the site, to the best of my ability. |

Your article "Joseph platter's Petition" is surely 1000 years off base! He is clearly writing not to a Roman emperor (there weren't any in 786 anyway) but to Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor of Germany, the monarch who encouraged the settling of the Batschka and other regions! It must be
1786--please check (& probably correct); |

My entire family came from Liebling in Banat, Romania and left Liebling on September 22, 1945. I have found all of my family history from when the families first arrived in Liebling (1786, 1787 and 1838) using documents from the Lieblinger Lutheran Church. In 1786 and 1787, when families arrived in Liebling as original settlers, the families came from other Donauschwaben settlements in Hungary.
How difficult will it be to find the history of the original settlers from when they were in Hungary? Has anyone used databases from Ulm where the migration began? Is the information available in English?
I am interested to hear from Donauschwaben researchers, especially from Banat, and of course, from our beloved LIEBLING!
Thank you for you interest and your service. |

My greatgrandfather, Joseph Pape, around 1840, lived in Hatzfeld and was buried there. He married Barbara Wagner, I think in Hungary. He had 5 children, Peter, Kate (Wilberth), Nickolas (my grandfather. b1871, came to the U.S. around 1907), Maria (Kamp) and Eva (Maurus). Maria Kamp's daughter Marie lived in Ujvar in 1974, married, with children Elizabeth, Reiner, Joseph and Matthias. They all lived in the Hatzfeld and Ujvar area.

„Liebe Frau Burghardt, ich finde die Gedichte im "Huschen" sehr originell, frisch und lustig, auch zum nachdenken anregend und ganz anders - auf einer natürlichen Art und Weise und gar nicht künstlich bemüht - wie viele andere Kindersachen.

My mother was born in Obresch in 1926 and was among those who were forced to flee to Austria in late 1944. I never understood her full story until I read it on your site. My mother now has Alzheimers and is unable to remember or understand very much so her story would have been completely lost if not for your research. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. |

I am just shooting a documentary on my donauschwäbische roots and I am researching the escape-route of my grandmother. She is named Elisabeth Bayer (maiden-name: Beer) and comes from Stanisic in the North of the Vojvodina. She escaped in the beginning of 1946 and stayed in a refugee-camp in Budapest. But I cannot find out, where this refugee-camp used to be. My aunt said, it was situated in the middle of the city center, close to the train station. It seemed to her like a kind of sports-hall. Can anybody help me to find out, where that camp was? I am very gratefull for any suggestion. Viola

This is a wonderful and informative website which has enhanced my studies of the Banat and the background of my Donauschwaben ancestry. I should have joined a long time ago! As family genealogist, I have found that an ancestor was the second mayor (schultheiss) of Werschetz - from 1740 - 1750. Would this mean he was part of the "Caroline Colonization" (Karolinsche Ansiedlung) from 1717 to 1740? Where can I find records telling where he migrated from in Western Europe?
Keep up the good work on this great website! Thank you, volunteers! |

My grandfather Josef Feuerer was born in Gara on November 6, 1903 the son of Vendel Feuerer who was 31 years old at the time so he must have been born circa 1872 and Terez Eisili who was 28 so her birth year would have been circa 1875. They were all Roman Catholic. I am looking for birth records for Vendel and Terez. My grandmother Erzsibet Fornetran was born in Rem on November 3, 1903 the daughter of Vendal Fornetran who was 34 year old at the time born circa 1869 and Julianna Heupt (Heipt) who was 28 years old born circa 1875. They were also Roman Catholic. I am also looking for birth records for Vendal and Julianna. She had a sister Gertrud Fornedran (sp?)born February 3, 1905 in Rem who married a Ferenc Scheffer of Bacsboked. If anyone can help me with any of this, it would

I am seeking to contact Mr. Duncan B. Gardiner regarding reproducing a map that was included in one of his books. The map is of Podelin - a town of my ancestors.
His book was titled German Towns in Slovakia & Upper Hungary A Genealogical Gazetteer. I am been attempting to get permission to reproduce this map for some time now. I would like to include it in a book my husband is writing on family roots. The book will not be sold publicly but will be distributed to family members and research facilities where we did work on the project.
I really would like to include a map of Podelin (Pudlin, Podelinec) if at all possible. Your website is my last hope to accomplish my goal. I would appreciate any guidance you can give regarding my request.
Thank you,
Catherine Davis

I am planning to visit their village in 2012 to see the town, streets, church and cemetery.
I have grown up with German culture and history.
I am currently a member of the Schwaben Club in Kitchener, Ontario.
I am hoping to find the history of Theresia and Josef Dworatschek's emigration to St. John, NB via boat from Hamburg, Germany.

I posted a request on Genealogy.com for anyone with information on the name of Kappel from Sopron, Hungary. My husband's Great-Grandfather, Rudolf Wilfing, married a woman named Elizabeth Kappel. I have some information of the Wilfing family from records in Sopron. But I have none of Elizabeth Kappel. She was born in that region in 1880, married, had four children there and then emigrated to the US in 1921. Her husband emigrated in 1913. She remained with four children for 8 years. Amazing. She died in 1951 and her obituary mentioned two living sisters still in Hungary. This interested me to find more information about who Elizabeth was and if any of her family is still in that area. I have read some of the history from this web site and I am so intrigued that I want to find
out more. I will sign up for your newsletters.
Thank you. |

Any suggestions from others who have traveled back would be helpful. Specifically, I am looking for a private tour guide who is knowledgeable about the German history in the areas of Vukovar, Banater Hof, and Betschgerek.

I would love to here from anyone who that may have information. My grandmother, Eva Martin and brother Anton, was from Ecka, arrived in New York in 1905. My father's name is Joseph Kurzweil, born 1908 in Segenthau. My mother's name is Katharina Kurzweil, born 1910 in Engelsbrunn. They were married in the US after immigrating as teenagers to New York City via Canada in 1927 and 1928. We don't think they knew one another in Romania. Joseph's father is Sebastian and his mother is Elizabeth and grandmother is Anna Maria. Katharins's father is Michael and her mother is Anna. Joseph has three brothers; Andrew, Anton and Nicholas. Katharina has one sister Anna, and a brother Joseph (maybe Hans) who died young of diptheria. Katharina's father Michael was a Hungarian Hussar in WWI and died 3 days after the war ended in battle as they did not get the word of the surrender.
Any leads to documented information about them and their lineage would be much appreciated. I suspect lineage goes back to Bavaria but I'm not certain.
Are there village coordinators for Segenthau, Engelsbrunn or Temeswar?

Does anyone have any information about the Karbach family from Kunbaja? My great great great grandparents were Franz Karbach and Eva Kammerer. My great great grandmother- Justina/Susanah Karbach was born in Kunbaja on Feb.1, 1854- she was the second wife of Anton Kaltner- they lived in Ridjica. Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

My mother was born in Zsablia as part of the German community. My mother's family was forced to flee to Germany and lived for 5 years in a settlement camp outside Munich. Her brother emigrated to the USA in 1956 and I emigrated in 1976. I've visited our old house in 1965 and now live in Atlanta. I'm proud of my heritage and hope to preserve the memories of my mother and her sacrifices. -MF |

This is in response to Helga Soare's email searching for family members from Ridjica. She did not provide her email so I cannot contact her. If she happens to be reading this, I could perhaps provide some information as two of the names she is searching Muskath and Bishoff are in my tree as well. I was also born in Ridjica in 1942 and coincidentally, my name is Helga. |

I stumbled on this site looking for a Juwetsch recipe on the internet. My father comes from Setchanfeld and my mother came from the Laudan near Werschetzt. I grew up in a Danubeschwäbian household and I try to duplicate my mother and Grandmother's Donauschwäbisches cooking. I was surprised when I found this site and happy to be able to research more of my Danubeschwäbian heritage. I grew up hearing fond stories from my parents and relatives about life in the Danubeswabian times before the war. Unfortunately there were also memories of the bad times while being enslaved in the communist internment camps after the war.

I am searching for the Ancestors and descendants of Franz and Anna (Prunk) Welsch who lived in Wiesenhaid, Hungary (Romania). Franz and Anna lived in Wiesenhaid in the late 1800`s and the early 1900`s as did many generations before them. I also have the names of their children Heinrich, Peter, Franz, Jacob, Johann, Nicholaus, Michael, Anton, Wendal, and Eva Welsch. I also have the names of their wives and children. If anyone has any more information about this family or any stories about the village of Wiesenhaid I would really appreciate your imput.. I am really interested in figuring out who might be the siblings of Franz Sr and what his parents names are. I am also really interested in the Catholic Church records in Austria being translated from the original Latin that were
recorded for the village of Wiesenhaid.
I just recieved a book in the mail from Germany called "Friedhof Wiesenhaid" from the author Manfred Bruckler. He went to Wiesenhaid and photographed all of the remaining graves and preserved this valuable information about who is buried there.. In it I found the names of many family members and I also found the names of many whom I dont know how they are related yet, but I am sure they are...
Thanks, Matt |

I have just started working on the my family tree which has been very difficult since I do not have any living relatives who were born before 1940. My mother's parents immigrated from Hungary separately in about 1903. I am trying to piece things together based on what my older siblings remember hearing over half a century ago and a few letters that were in my mother's possessions.
Mr. Leeb has been so very helpful in providing information from Billed on my grandfather's ancestors. I am so very thankful for all his efforts.
Reading about the persecutions that followed WWII is very disturbing, but still necessary reading. The courage of all those providing their stories is very humbling.

Hello:
I was happy to come across what looks to be a well planned site.
I have information on ancestors for both surnames. In both cases I would be interested in lifestyle and departure to Canada, both of which would have been between 1885 to l921. I would also very much appreciate learning what their place of origin was prior to moving to Lazarfeld and Zichydorf, as well as the year the arrived in Banat. If you can provide any information or guidance in this regard it would be hugely appreciated.
Appreciatively,

My mother was born Luise Litzenberger in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia in 1926 and grew up in Pantschowa. She left, fortunately, with her parents in 1944, before the horrors took place, and went to Germany. In 1951, she went to England and married my father. I would be very interested in hearing from anybody who could tell me about daily life in Pantschowa and Franzfeld. My mother is old now and cannot remember so much being away from there so long and not having much contact with people from home. (When I was growing up in England people were rather anti-German and so I didn't want to know. Sad and stupid. Now I am very interested! )
I have relatives in Mansfield, Ohio called Giess; the family of my mother's sister Anna.
I speak, read and write German.
Do you know of any Germans still in Pantschowa? |

There is no one left in the generation to give me information. I have a crewell picture of a home on a river, which my Grandmother said her mother made to remember their homeland. She told me it was on the Tissa River (Tisza) and she always said it was Tissent Miklos. Wne put together I believe it was Tisza Szmentmicklos. She has a picture of a grave (her Grandmother. Name Maria Haas) who was married to Anton Klemm. She also had a picture of a beautiful church with the name Tissasent Micklos on the back. We believe it might have been a Catholic Church. She made me promise to always keep it. I have become interested in learning more of their background. It is very difficult. My Grandmother never told us much. She and her parents and 2 children came to the USA in 1921 for good.
Except for her parents. They went back in the 2nd WW to try to save their land. They were taken and put in the camps because they were German and as far as we know they died there. Josef Manyet (her father) was in the Austrian Army and was once sent to a concentration camp in Siberia. After getting out they came to America. She said he was gone 5 years. Any help or ideas I would appreciate it. |

Thanks for creating this site. My great grandfather fell in love with a Banat Schwabian woman, married her, and then immigrated to Canada with her in the late 1800's. My father told me She was Schwopes (phonetic spelling) so today is the first I've learned of my Banat Schawian background. I'd be interested in learning more about the cultural practices of the Banat Schawians - dress, dance, art, literature, etc.if possible. |

Hi Again,
<>I tried sending a message, but it didn't seem to go through, so I must have done something wrong. I enjoyed looking at this site. I hope that I can find some more information about my relatives from Glogon, many didn't leave and died there in the second War, and some did escape the camps, and went to Germany. My grandparents (Franz Liebzeit, Caroline Büchler) came to Winnipeg, Canada in 1912, after one son died as a baby in Glogon. They had 3 children here, one son, my father, who was baptized "Franz" but called Frank. He died in 1987. I don't have nearly enough information on my family from Glogon, and my grandfather was the only one of his family to leave there. One brother and two sisters stayed. One sister was still living in Yugoslavia when he died in December 1971, I
believe she was married to a Serbian man, and lived in Starchowa, but am not sure.
I was contacted (through my aunt, my father's sister) in 1969 by a Peter Liebzeit in Banja Luka, who is a cousin, and we wrote a couple of times, although I had to get my letters translated because I don't know German. My father didn't marry a German wife, my mother has Irish and Scots ancestry. However, I never heard from Peter Liebzeit again, and I know he had two sons, one Martin born about 1949 in Russia (where Peter was sent for hard labour), and one born about 1965 in Banja Luka, after he returned from Russia, and by a second wife. I would love to find that family.
I have had some contact with a cousin in Germany, but he doesn't know English, and I don't know German, so it's really difficult communicating. I try writing short notes in German, and I have to find somebody to translate his notes and the letter he wrote in January. I know a lot about my mother's family, but not about my father's family.
Hope there are others researching Glogon. I know there's a website about it, but it is not complete, and not accurate about my family. I was in touch with the person who did the website, but it hasn't helped me at all.
Thanks,
Jane Liebzeit

I was taken to this site by searching for my great-grandparents. To my surprise someone was looking for information for them also.
I hope that I might be able to further my information for my dad and the rest of my family.
Thanks for this site. |

My parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were evicted from this village by the Russian Army because they were of German descent. They were sent to Austria and stayed in a lumber camp (Reindlmuhl?) then were sent to Germany to be taken in by German households. Later they immigrated to Canada and the United States. Some family died and is buried in Germany. |

I am a beginner at this task in trying to locate any information about my maternal grandfather (Matthias [Matypas] Seifert and both of my maternal great grandfathers (Joseph Quint and Anton Seifert). All were Catholic German-speaking Hungarians and settled in St Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Norwood, a city surrounded by Cincinnati, OH. Matypas Seifert was a "rough" carpenter, while Joseph Quint was a furniture/finish carpenter. |

From time to time I have searched for information on my father's (Alexander/Sandor Rozsa) lineage on the web but struck gold this week when I discovered Rose Mary's hard work on her family genealogy - for our family genealogy cross with my great, great grandfather Gyorgy Rozsa of Semlac. According to Rose Mary's note under my grandfather Adam Rozsa, my grand parents were witnesses at her (grand?) parents wedding in Harrisburg, PA in 1914. Small world? According to the passage records of Ellis Island, dad was only 10 months old upon arrival in the US in 1912. Thought dad had returned to Semlac and then returned to US as a teenager. Cannot find any passenger records of such. Did he stay behind with family? Never would have uncovered the Donauschwaben Community had I not made this
breakthrough to Semlac. Keep up the great work. |

All my life, 48 years, I have heard the stories from my grandmother, father and god-mother. I was frustrated that history in school never taught of their plight. My father is still alive, Richard Baumgärtner (Baumgaertner). I was afraid the stories would end when he is gone. My father lived in Werschetz with my widowed grandmother, his widowed aunt and my widowed great-grandmother. His paternal grandparents lived in Karlsdorf. They owned a farm there. His grandfather's name was Josef "Rafel Hans" Baumgärtner. When my father was about 10 or 11, my grandmother agonized on whether or not to send him to Hitler Youth. He wanted to go and they knew what was coming. My father boarded the last train with other boys to go to military school. After reading here what happened to
the children of Werschetz, I know she really did make the best decision for him. Shortly after, Russian soldiers came to empty the village, My great-grandmother (Steininger), grandmother (Maria Baumgärtner), Anna Habarmuller and her daughter Gertrude were taken to a work camp. Much later, they escaped the camp when my grandmother drugged the guards with poppies. She cooked for them and she put the drug in their food. My grandfather Baumgärtner was sickly so he was starved to death in a camp, His wife, Francisca did survive the camp. My god-mother did return to Werschetz a few years ago. The graveyard where my ancestors were buried has been dug up and their remain were put in a mass grave.
There are so many stories. I was discouraged when I started to do my family
tree and could not find any information on my ancestors. I am so grateful to have this site. Many of the things I read here match the stories I was told all my life. I went to a mostly Jewish school when I was growing up. Many German children were taunted and called "Nazi". I held my tongue, knowing my grandparents experienced similar circumstances in concentration camps.
I am so grateful to have this site. I am so thankful to have found it while my father is still alive. I am printing up so much to show him.
Thank you,
Susan Baumgärtner-Fentz |

Szubin, he lived in Jabuka and married Maria Rubas

September 29, 1894. I can find all sort of
information on them from the time they arrived at
Ellis Island in November 1920. Once my
grandparents got to Ellis Island the Z was dropped
in our last name, it was apparently and error on
Ellis Island side. No one really knows why
but my grandmother's name changed to Mary from
Maria. Mary was more American.
My Great Grandmother's name was
Katalin Pruv and she married Larza Groza in
September of 1920.

My grandfather
was Anton Lorbert, who I found through this
website, was murdered in 1943 in a death
camp. The last surviving daughters, Rosalia
and Anna, are looking for survivors of that
town. They were taken by wagon by a teacher
and her husband along with 9 or 10 kids because
the Serbs were advancing followed by the
Russians. They escaped within hours of the
village being taken over. Is there anyone
out there who remembers this? Pictures,
stories, books, articles? I believe it was
October, 1943 when my mother and aunt
escaped. Looking for neighbors of the
Lorberts, children that remember Rosie and Anna
- their sisters were Teresa and and
Barbara. Anyone know how to reclaim the
family land? Any information would be
helpful. Thank you.

My family

Is it possible that he was not part of

I am a bit confused

Did Tscherwenka become Schajasch-Sentiwan
or are they different towns? Are
they close to one another?
Also does anyone know where I can get

Sentiwan?
I would GREATLY

Have limited information to share re Banat
history...that is my current desire, to
develop that information and back track that to
origins in Western Germany. Have information
to share on Turtle Lake/Almena, Wisconsin;
Athens, Wisconsin and can refer to source re
Kansas. Limited information re Nicklaus
Matye b. 1829-1833 unknown village; left
Deutsch Czerny in 1909 as a widower (wife's
name unknown) He moved to Wisconsin to be
with son, Nicklos Matye b. 1862 and his wife, Anna
Bauer b. 1867 and Johann Matye b. 1860? and
his wife Margaret b.1862. Nick and Johann
and families had earlier emmigrated from
unknown village in Hungary 1890's.
Other generous source has Matye's as
witnesses to baptisms/weddings in Mollidorf
area in 1870's and 80's ( Josephus, Susanna,
Petri, Petrus, Anna, Maria, Borbala)
This has been a very enjoyable experience and my
family had no knowledge about the Banat
history in the family....very, very
interesting! I would appreciate any
advice or assistance. |

in my post cards for translation. I
am researching my grandmother Barbara Traum,
born in Ketfel in 1890-1889. Her name
was actually Franziska but went by the name
of Barbara. Her brother Jacob stayed in
Ketfel, while brother Peter came to
America. The mother of the children was
named Barbara. She was married twice,
I believe. The grandmothers maiden
name was Gebhart. I am looking forward to
learning more about the family, and learn
about the village. I hope some day to come
and visit.

Very interested in this website and

his family is from Filipowa - they lost their

- their family then was interned in Gakowa and
lost their young sister to starvation in
the camp. They eventually escaped into
Hungary - made their way to Villach until they
emigrated to Kitchener, Ontario Canada in
the early 1950's. I had the
opportunity to visit to Backi Gracac
(Filipowa) in 1989 while still
Yugoslavia. My
family has a number of hardcover books written
about Filipowa (in German) about its
history and culture. Fantastic
initiative - I will certainly spread its
existence throughout my family. Peter

Comments/suggestions about the
Project: I think it's a
great site for research.
Surnames you
are researching: Manes,
Mannes
Villages of
interest to you: Klenak,
Irig, Apatin
Comments:
I'm a novice researcher trying to
find information about my father's
family who left Klenak, Yugoslavia
during WW II. The surnames are
Mannes or Manes. My grandmother's
maiden name was Fellinger.
I don't
know where to go to find information
about Klenak or the town
of Irig where my grandmother was
born. Apatin and Ruma are also
places where there may be information
about the family. In
addition, I am looking
for information about the camp
my father's family lived in after being
forced to leave Klenak. The
camp was in Austria and was
called Gradig (or something like
it)
Any
information or suggestions will be
greatly appreciated. |

within a 2 week span-Thanks to Alex and

Comments:
I'm fortunate to know quite a lot about
my family history, both in Elek and in our
original home town of Amrichshausen.
The latter is located in what is today
Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany in an area called
the Hohenloherland, which is about an hour
and a half northeast of Stuttgart. The local
dialect sounds very similar to that of the
Elekers, which itself is a mixture of
Frankish and Swabian. I was very
pleased to be able to take part in this
year's (2006) Weltfreundschaftstreffen der Eleker
(world reunion of Elekers) and get to know
several distant relatives. This was my
fourth trip to Elek and I feel like a know
the area pretty well by now. I've been
in contact with Matt Tremmel, who has been doing
his own genealogical research on the Tremmel
family. It turns out that both of our
grandmothers were from Almaskamaras and
married men from Elek. Almas
(shortened form) was actually settled by
several families from Elek, so everyone in
the two towns is somehow related. I should
mention that I grew up near Stuttgart and,
consequently, speak German fluently. This
has been a tremendous help in getting
information and being able to read it in its
original German.

Comments: I
am interested in my Donauschwaben
heritage. My father is from a small
dorf Sarwasch (HIrschfeld) and my mother was
from a lager town called Essegg. Both towns
were located in Slavonia. I believe
between the Drava and Danube rivers.

Comments:
Thank-you so much for this incredible
web-site! And I can't believe it is free
with such enlightening information. My
father, soon to be age 91 years of age, will
appreciate knowing he has an older
village in Hungary with his surname -
Hegyes! That is great info to pass on to his
grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Much time
has been invested in your project, and I
applaud your work. Wonderful!

Surnames you
are researching: Marx, Heimbach,
Mueller
Villages of
interest to you: Grossentniklaus
(Nagysantmiklous), Obeba,
Keglovitsch
Comments: I
have reached dead ends in searching for Marx
in Obeba, Keglevitsch and Nagyszentmiklous,
now Sannicolau Mare. The basic problem
is that I can't determine the exact Marx
family before 1884. Too many (60) Marx
families came from the Rhineland Basin when
the Banat was first settled and guessing is
useless.
My
grandmother was born in Obeba as Dorotya
Heimbach,1887, and my grandfather was born
in Keglevitsch as Peter Marx, 1884. I
would also love to see pictures of any of the
above villages. Jodi's photographs are
wonderful, give me an idea at least of those
towns which must be similar.
Thank you to
all ~Eleanor |
