Alex,
It's a small world--I remember Carl Bolbecher
and his first wife years ago in Winnipeg,
although I did not know him too well--my sister
knew him better. He joined the Kolping Society
of Winnipeg, of which my husband was a founding
member, after we moved to Vancouver. We met him
and his second wife, Martha last year at the
50th Anniversary of the of the K.S. Winnipeg.
Alex, did you know Carl through the CN Railways?
Speaking of the Kolping Society, it used to be
called the Gesellenverein (Journeymen's
Association} before WWII and was strongly
represented in Austria-Hungary. Many young
Donauschwaben, including one of my uncles, were
members.

Rose.
I never met Carl, who worked for the CN, in
Winnipeg, and I worked for the CPR, in Calgary.
When we were on our vacation in Flin-Flon,
Manitoba, last week. I found the Obit. in the
Winnipeg Free Press. I seem to have a habit
looking in the Obt. rather than the Sports page.
It seemed Carl was quite active in many things
and had a great sense of humour.

Batschka to Germany

Alex,
answering your questions:
My maiden
name was Zentner. I also was baptized by
that name, but in Germany the kids teased me by
calling me Rosine, and that means "raisin" in
German, so I've been called Rosi or Rose. I have
one cousin in Novi Sad. My husband and I visited
her in 1985 and we wrote to each other a few
times, but then she stopped writing and did not
reply to any more of my letters, I should really
try to contact her again. Her father had a
Hungarian name and that made things easier for
the family.
My father's
brother, who had immigrated in 1926, sponsored
us to come to Canada. Yes, you're right, Portage
and Main gets very windy. I remember the wind
going right through me at -40, wind chill factor
-70 when I worked just a few blocks from there.
My husband,
Günther, is a great admirer, supporter and
defender of the Donauschwaben, although he was
born near Offenbach am Main. We met and married
at St. Joseph's Church in Winnipeg's
North End.
Thank you for asking and Servus

There is nothing better then a German fresh
baked (wagon wheel) bread. Cannot not be
found here in Mpls area. I did find some sehr
gut brot in Winnipeg. Ellice Meat Market and
European Deli- 712 Ellice Ave, Winnipeg, Man
R3G0B1. I usually load up as much as car
will hold and hopefully they do not stop me at
the border.

Firmus,
Ah, for an old Winnipegger who now lives in the
Vancouver area, Ellice Meat Market brings
back memories. The bread they carry probably
comes from City Bread which bakes many wonderful
European varieties of bread, also the very
popular Winnipeg Rye. For anyone traveling to
Winnipeg., City Bread is on 232 Jarvis
Avenue, west of Main Street, close to the
German Society (Flora & Charles) in the North
End.
Guten Appetit.....Rose

Verna Kuhl
Hi' How do
you get information of registration in Vienna? I
am trying to find out if the Kuhls' ,my 5th
generation ancestors, went to Hungary
My 4th great grandmother Kraushaar/Kuhl went
through Vienna with her parents, C.1783 to
Hohenbach Galacia as a young widow with a baby
son (who was my 3rd Great grandfather) Johann
Anton Kuhl (her husband Martin Kuhl's only
child) Her husband Martin Kuhl who must have
died very young, may not have even got as far as
Vienna I have all of 3rd Great grandfather
Johann Anton Kuhls' ancestry in Galacia up until
my Grandfather & Grandmother Kuhl came from
Lutzk, Volhynia to Winnipeg, Mb., 1907 or
08. My brick wall is 4th Great grandfather
Martin Kuhl & what happened to him.
Through the kindness of genealogists ,I know
that there was an Anton Kuhl with a party of
about 7 who went through Vienna on their way to
somewhere in Hungary. This could possibly be my
5th Great Grandfather, the father of Martin and
Martin perhaps named his only child Johann Anton
after his father Anton?
Thanks for your time- Verna Kuhl
Hello Verna
Kuhl.
Thanks you for
your message.- A Johann Kuhl, registered in
Vienna, on 6.4.1767, from Piterburg in
Lothringen (Lorraine), Philippsbourg, South East
from "Bitsch," went to Banat. Nikolaus
Kuhl,-Vienna 4.6.1784, farmer age 23, with wife
Elisabeth, from Barindingen-Lorraine., to Banat.
Peter Kuhl,-Vienna, 5.6.1766, from Erterbach,
from the Reich, to Banat. I believe the
name Kuhl, was known in Bogarosch, Banat, maybe
some of our list members can verify the name
Kuhl in Bogarosch, or other villages?
Krausshaar (Korte, Graushaar) Johann Hermann,
son of Johann Jodocus Korte and Maria Elisabeth
Kraushaar, born 19.10.1740 in Deutmeche
Kirchenbuch Schönholthausen, - Finentrop/Saul,
1786 to Hatzfeld/Banat. then 1790 to Marienfeld,
married 15.7.1768 in Elspe/Saul. ------ Johann
Kraushaar, labourer from Aasen, North East from
Donaueschingen. with wife and children and
sister, to Hungary in 1741/42. I hope this will
help you in your research. You might be
interested in joining our Helping group.
Take care and good luck. Alex.

Subject: RE: [DVHH-L] Temp Electric Outlets
Reminds me of the Canadian story about the
American trailer parked in a parking lot in
Winnipeg that had electric outlets, in the
middle of summer. "How thoughtful of Canadians
to provide these outlets" said the fellow while
he plugged in his electric shaver. This story is
just about as credible as the one about the car
with American license plates and skis on the
roof, supposedly seen in Montreal in the middle
of July.
Sorry, this is Canadian humour; our DS ancestors
had different jokes.

Every
summer, my father's pride and joy were his
pepper plants, to the point that my mother
complained he was neglecting the other
vegetables and flowers when it came to watering
them He fertilized them faithfully and he
virtually flooded them with water. He always
maintained that "Paprika ist eine Sumpfpflanze
(try to twist your tongue around that last
word), meaning, "The pepper plant is a marsh
plant". No wonder they thrived so beautifully in
the Danube plain. He grew the most beautiful
peppers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, planting
them on the Victoria Day weekend (American
Memorial Day) and protecting them from potential
frost with shingles all around. For those of you
in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and the harsh
climate states of the US, you can do it too,
because the summers are very hot day and
night, unlike in the Pacific Northwest. |
