Philly Memories . . .

Pottstown is about an hour Northwest of Philadelphia…my Stahl Relatives and Nischbach relatives all lived in Philadelphia, but a few lived in Pottstown…but even those that lived in Pottstown, held residence in Philadelphia at some point or other.
Many of my photos are taken at the Stahl Photography Studio at 2nd and Girard Ave.., Phila., PA. The Studio was owned by Peter Stahl, my great uncle. My mother, Agnes, did all the coloring of the photos. My mother’s brother, Henry, later bought the studio when my great uncle retired to his vacation home in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. All Stahl’s are relatives…brothers to my grandfather, Adam Stahl.
The Bauer’s married Remich’s and Klingler’s and Wingeron’s. My great grandfather Romich (who remained in GJ), was also married to a Wingeron. The Bauer’s lived around the corner from us in the Hunting Park Section. The many Bauer photos were given to me by Paul Staub, grandson of Philip Bauer and Susanna Klingler. Phil and Susanna had two children…Barbara and Phil Bauer, Jr., who was first cousin to my father, and they were very close because they lived around the corner.
The Bauer’s, Piljer’s, Trendler’s, Bongart’s, Klingler’s are just some of the families who lived in the Hunting Park Section. These families were either extended family by marriage, or friends of the family. I can remember many of them because they played cards (German) with my grandparents, Philip and Eva Remich.
The Remich’s and Bauer’s are from Gross Jetscha and settled Philadelphia.
The Schneider’s are my father’s mother’s side. My father was raised in Philadelphia. My grandmother’s mother, Magdalena came to lived with them in Philadelphia, The other Schneider’s (Rose) lived in a suburb outside of Philadelphia. Her brother, Jacob, lived in New York. I don’t know where the other Schneider siblings resided.
Many of these families, including my parents, frequented the German-Hungarian Club (Caanstatters) in Northeast Philadelphia. The club is still in existence: www.cvvphilly.com/photos.htm
The Dubas photos (tombstones) are from my husband’s family…he is Ukrainian/Lithuanian descent. They all lived in Philadelphia. His Uncle, Philip Dubas, was in the Philadelphia Orchestra with Peter Stahl’s son, Jacob Stahl. They both played violin.
