My grandfather, Adam Gabriel, had many brothers and sisters.
I believe he was the youngest in his family. He left
the Banat area to study engineering in Vienna and eventually
came to the U.S. around 1913, settling in Chicago. At some
point he opened Acme Industrial Corporation which he ran until
he retired and my father, Adam Frank Gabriel, took over as
President. In the late 1970's or early 1980's the company
was sold off to a larger corporation.
In the above photo, I believe my grandfather is the
youngest male--the one on the left. The image of his father
seated next to him corresponds with the small photo in the book
of poetry that I have, although he is much older in the photo in
the book.
My grandfather, Adam Gabriel, met and married Anna Fisch here in
the U.S. but according to my grandfather they had only lived
about 17 kilometers apart in Austria-Hungary as she was from
Ortzidorf. They had two children, Adam and Lawrence.
My uncle Larry is still alive, but my father, being twelve
years older, has already passed away. My grandparents
traveled back to the Banat just once in 1937 to visit relatives
and attend the wedding of someone important to them. I
presume it was a family member. I have a short black and
white movie from that trip.
If you have any additional information about Josef Gabriel,
Mercydorf, Ortzidorf, the Fisch family, or the Banat of Temesvar
to share, please contact me.
