Old Home Places

"'They're not just houses,
          they were homes of Banaters
"

I visited Neubeschenowa, May 2004, taking many photos of some previously owned Banater home places around the town.  Although I didn't take many house photos, you may find your family name among them, which are not in any specific order.

Take a look at some of the old Homesteads in Neubeschenowa.  It will give you an idea of how the houses were build way back and their condition today.  Notice the details in some of the designs, craftsmen walked among them.

Many of the house fronts were covered with trees, making it almost impossible to take a photo with a clear view.  Because of this, some of the pictures of inscriptions don't have a coordinating house photo.

The photos were cropped for maximum viewing for a web page, the actual images are much larger.  Feel free to copy the images for your personal use, but if you would like to use a picture on your website, contact me first.  If you would like a copy of the original photo, email Jody

Searching the town for any remaining German families, we were directed to Mr. Josef Schäfer.

Our visit with Mr. Schäfer made an impression in my memory that will last a long time.

His house is in much needed repair, but he has no money. He & his wife Johanna are old and in bad health.

He told us about his family, his children, their struggles and why they remained. Mr. Schäfer was amazed to learn people in America are interested in the people of Mercydorf.

Mathias & Susanna Schaffer On the 1930 Household list, Josef & Katherina are @ house #243

Margaret Dupta Family @ Nr. 364 was not home. Daughter Alina, her daughter and husband. In 1930 this home was owned by Jakob & Susanne Lutz /2 kids.

We returned later only to find her still not home. But the young woman Alina handed me a piece of paper with information about some families, she copied from a village book. She also gave me her tele #.
