Many of the old homes still stand

Schowe as seen in Google Maps
From the air, Schowe still resembles the former German village. Compare this image to the map on the History page.
For the German inhabitants of Schowe the history of the communities Alt Schowe and Neu Schowe stopped at the end of World War II. Many inhabitants fled before the collapse, those who stayed were rounded up and forced into death camps. Few escaped.
But much of the village buildings - sturdy homes constructed in the early part of the last century - remain today. Now occupied by strangers.
