I have been searching my Father's
side of family and the Banat region and the name Donauschwaben
came up. I had never heard of either terms before. (June
2006)
Both families came via Ellis Island records from Temesvar (1907
- 1915).
My Grandfather,
JOSEF BASTIAN, b. 19 Apr 1884 in (Temesvar, according to his
ship manifest) Hungary, son of
Catherine Lambert and Matthew Bastian. He arrived in the USA
via Ellis Island on the ship Vaderland from Hamburg on June 14,
1914.
The manifest
stated ethnic origin as Hungary, German. He was to visit his
brother-in-law, LEOPOLD POTZTOTA, in Chicago.

We have a picture
~ 1913 showing his parents; a brother, John ?; sisters: Barbara
and Elizabeth; wife Anna and his two children.
The story
goes: his wife, Anna, was to follow shortly, as she had given
birth in 1914. The war broke out and her ship was forced to
return. She and her three children were detained in a
concentration camp where the infant and a daughter died. Anna
finally arrived in the USA via Ellis Island on the ship Nieuw
Amsterdam from Rotterdam with her 5 yr. old son on Sept. 30,
1915. Anna was born in Ujpecs and child
Josef was born in Temesvar.
