My Grandfather Illes Karakas, b: 09 Dec 1844 Turkszentmiklos
married Julianna Bakos, 26 Dec 1878 in Temesvar

In the Ellis Island records my mother was listed in her first trip from Fiume as Ertzebet Karakas.  In her second trip her name was listed as Elise Nessle. In the 1920 U.S. Census she is listed as Elsa Hudson. So You can see why I'm having some difficulty in tracing her through records.  On top of that she never talked much about her family and her life in Hungary.  The only things I can recall her mentioning were: 1. my grandfather had blue eyes and red hair, 2. he was  an officer in the Royal Hussars, 3. she attended a Catholic girls school, 4. her family was protestant and she had a miserable time at school although she did learn to speak English well and French poorly there, 5. she had nieces and nephews who were older than she, 6. one of her brothers was in the Embassy in Constantinople and she had visited him there.  In the 1930's she was sending money to her mother who was living with one of my mother's cousins.

I didn't learn much from the 1906 manifest other than she was going to visit her brother and she had given her age as 15 rather than her true age of 14.  Several years ago I had a genealogy group in Budapest research her family.  They found church records showing an Illes Karakas marrying Julianna Bekos on 12.26.1878 in Temesvar with seven children, the first being born 02.28.1876 and the second 03.16.1879 with the others at two and three year intervals apart after that.  They had church records for everyone born except for my mother's. Illes was born in Torokszentmiklos and Julianna in Bekes.  They were married when Illes was 34 and Julianna was about 24!
